A broker recently approached us with a home insurance case which had several issues to consider.
Their client had an unspent conviction for assault in the mid 90's, 3 claims (all for escape of water), a grade listed wattle and daub building and a health/beauty business run from home with frequent visitors.
We looked at this case in its component parts.
We were able to accommodate the conviction term free, given the time that had passed and the client's age at the time of the incident.
The multiple escape of water claims were initially addressed with an exclusion for escape of water, however, following our recommendation to install a water leak detection device we offered cover with an increased excess.
As the client's home was Grade 1 listed and of non standard construction, following confirmation of the condition of the electrics and the type of heating installed, we were able to provide cover with no additional restrictions.
The business use aspect was addressed with a theft restriction (violent and/or forcible entry or exit), property owners liability remained in force from our side and the client having their own insurances in place meant we did not apply any physical exclusions via endorsement.
This case is a great example of how we deal with each consideration specifically and individually - rather than take a broad brush approach, normally resulting in a decline for most insurers. We really can help.
